Underneath the branches of a small oak tree, a young mightyena laid amongst the roots. His eyes were closed, ears resting flatly on his head and lastly, his tail was curled over his grey muzzle. The river gently flowed by to his right, and the gentle trickling noise made him feel relaxed. He had yet to fall victim to sleep, but Crayton knew that with a little more dozing, sleep wouldn't be avoidable.
Crayton was a little weary after a terrible nights rest, which had caused him to go to the river to get some shut-eye. He could feel the tiredness in his muscles, but sleep didn't come to him, making him release a quiet sigh. He decided to wait and hope for the best, the best being the sleep he desired.
When Gyasi had set out this morning his plan for the day entailed only a casual walk to Starlight Beach to investigate a report of something strange washing ashore. Most reports of that kind were false, and he expected this one to be no different.
What he didn’t expect was getting so lost.
Normally he had a wonderful sense of direction, but normally he had a compass. With one misstep on a steep slope while paying too much attention to the needle pointing north, he’d found himself in a pile on the ground, without his compass or a good idea of where he’d ended up. Map rendered useless, no one in sight to ask directions of, he simply started walking.
He wandered through Little Oak Forest, taking turns when it seemed like a good idea, until he heard the sound of running water. The stream was a welcome sight. The flow of water led him down, eventually reaching the river of the forest.
This he could work with. Moonlight Village wasn’t far from the river, he just needed to figure out if he needed to walk upstream or downstream. Gyasi sat and pondered, explored the close area for any hints, and gave up. He would go downstream and hope for the best.
So again he started walking. The river seemed to be getting bigger, but he couldn’t tell for certain. He still hadn’t come across any major landmarks. Irritated, he took pulled the map out from his shoulder bag. His geological skills refused to cooperate. No matter how hard he looked-
Gyasi, for the second time today, tripped.
He let out a yelp, barely having enough reaction time to keep his face from meeting dirt. He pushed himself up. Furiously folding his map and spinning on his heels, found a young mightyena just laying there by the riverbank like pokemon weren't walking there.
“Hey, what do you think you’re doing?” Gyasi huffed.
Crayton heard the sounds of footsteps, but knew already that he was close to Moonlight Village. His paranoid side pulled at him to open his eyes, but he refused. There was no point in seeing who was coming, since it was most likely a pokemon just wandering about. Then he heard a voice, and his ears flicked to acknowledge it.
His head lifted and his eyes opened to feast upon a larvitar. The larvitar asked him what he was doing, and Crayton just yawned and sat up. "Well, I was having a nap, then you disturbed me," Crayton answered. The young mightyena soon stood to his small height, his front limbs stretching forward into a nice stretch. "Now what are you doing here? I gave you answer, so I deserve one back, correct?" Crayton asked, making sure not to sound demanding.
“Walking, no thanks to you.” Gyasi said, brushing dirt off his chest.
You’d hope pokemon would nap were others could see them. Though, through his map he’d miss even a shiny magikarp in the road. His anger was more directed at himself and his apparent inability to stay on his feet. This was, after all, a popular place to rest. The fact this mightyena was the first pokemon he’d came across, and that he didn’t see him, was simply bad luck. Not bad intentions.
Gyasi sighed. “Sorry. That came out wrong. Look, I’m really lost, could you point me in the direction of Moonlight Village?”
His stomach rumbled. He’d lost several the berries he’d planned on eating, and had already eaten the rest in his walking. He was going to get something at the beach so he hadn’t packed much to begin with.
The young mightyena was not pleased with what the larvitar had said. Was there such a problem with wanting to be comfortable? However, Crayton wasn't one to pick a fight, so he passively ignored the comment. Well, this is going swell, Crayton thought to himself sarcastically. With a few other thoughts, he nearly missed what the larvitar had said, thankfully Crayton could just piece together the sentences.
"No need to apologize, I would be a little flustered myself," Crayton said, then continued. "Moonlight Village should be due north of here, and I have some food if you need, Crayton answered. He moved to his left, revealing an old bag from behind him. Should I charge him? Nah, might as well be kind, the merchant thought to himself. Crayton nosed his way into his bag, grabbing an apple and a few berries. "Take what you need," Crayton offered kindly.
"Also, my name's Crayton, what's yours?" Crayton asked, trying to rouse a casual conversation.
Beat had been hanging in a bat-like position on a very tall tree, resting. He was more of a nocturnal Pokemon, and was normally sleeping during these hours. However, his large and sensitive ears had began to twitch slightly as they picked up some voices nearby. The noivern's bright yellow eyes opened. His ears vibrated slightly as they let out a high pitched sound that was inaudible to most Pokemon. He was merely using some echolocation to determine where these someones were. He waited for awhile before locating some Pokemon in the woods. There appeared to be two or more of them. Well, what did he have to loose? It would be hard to fall back asleep with the sun in his eyes.
Scaling down his tree, he saw the Pokemon he had sensed earlier now that he was below the treeline. There was a Mightyena and a Larvitar to be exact on the species. Using his black coloration to help stealth his way over, Beat crept through the tree canopies, sometimes glancing down through the leaves to see where he was. Eventually the dragon Pokemon had made his was into a tree that was very close to the two. Hopefully they had not seen him. He had been working on his stealth last night, but the dark skies were now blue and the sun was in the sky. At least the trees provided some shade for him to creep through.
Now nestled into a comfortable spot, Beat considered maybe giving the two a quick spook, but quickly swatted away the idea for now. Best to sit and watch for now. The Noivern was perched on a large and sturdy branch in the canopy of the trees, his body mostly hidden by the leaves. However, if one looked closely, they would see two glowing yellow eyes up above.
This mightyena, Crayton he called himself, wasn’t so bad. With a “Thanks” Gyasi gladly took the offered apple. He sat down on the grass, appreciation for the first time today its soft texture rather than the wetness that made his feet cold. One bite of the apple told him it was exactly what he was looking for. Maybe his luck wasn’t as fowl today has he had first thought.
“I’m Gyasi.” He answered. An odd name, he knew, not common and sounding like, as someone once put it, a glameow sneezing, but it was his.
Sliding the weight that was his bag off his shoulder, he decided to take a page from Crayton’s book and relax for a short while before heading into town. He let himself feel the soft breeze… and then felt a cold rush on the back of his neck.
“Does it feel to you,” he asked, “like we’re being watched?”
Crayton was glad that the larvitar appreciated the food, and had given his name. Crayton smiled, and commented, "Gyasi, that is a very unique name." He watched as Gyasi sat down and removed his bag. Crayton slid the remainder of his items into his old bag, tucking it beside the tree. Then, with a friendly smile, Crayton settled himself back down into the roots of the oak tree. However something didn't feel quite right, and almost immediately after that, his paranoia sparked. Crayton's eyes glanced around every so often, but failed to see anything that was out of place.
I am I being overly paranoid? The young mightyena questioned himself, until he heard Gyasi comment on it. "Yeah, I thought I was being paranoid, until you commented on it,"Crayton answered, admitting his paranoia. His eyes darted about once more, but still nothing came into sight."I don't see anything though, but I think we should trust our instincts," Crayton suggested.
The two pokemon below were indeed being watched. Beat chuckled to himself watching the two below. Usually he was rather well-mannered and mature, being an adult Pokemon. But he was now really considering the idea of giving these two a quick spook. He figured not much would happen apart from the two talking, so why the heck not? But he did not really want to have them view him as an enemy, even though Beat thought that he would be able to easily beat them. He was always overconfident and willing to take any risk.
Well, they would notice him at some point in time, so Beat decided to go on with his little pranking idea. He first used his long tail to swat a few loose branches out of the tree, which would hopefully direct the attention of the two pokemon below in a different direction. He then carefully climbed down the trunk of the tree, now standing right behind the two. " Boo. "
Gyasi scanned the bushes, the surface of the lake, and the trees. If Crayton felt something as well, there had to be something there. As he said, instincts were rarely wrong, and those that didn’t trust them would quickly learn otherwise. The problem was where. He was considering going out and searching, no point in just waiting, when another idea came to mind. Quickly finishing the apple, he tossed the core into the bushes he felt were most likely to be the hiding place.
Tree branches rustled behind him. He spun around, locating the still-swaying branches but seeing nothing besides.
“Stop hiding!” He yelled.
This was getting annoying. The feeling of being watched still hadn’t gone away, if anything it’d gotten worse. Anticipation had him waiting for something to jump out at his face. Instead, it came from behind.
Unoriginal line aside, Gyasi instinctively leaped forward, letting out a startled yelp. Without even looking to see whodunit, he picked up the nearest rock and flung it at his assailant.
Crayton was concerned about the creature that was possibly in the area. The very feeling of being watched made the mightyena's fur bristle as he scanned the area. He sniffed at the air, only catching the slightest scent of something unusual. Like most of his species, he had a good sense of smell, but the scent was unfamiliar to him. He heard the branches rustle above, making his glance drift upwards, but the creature was pretty sneaky.
Crayton began to scan the branches, only letting his ears tune in to hear Gyasi yell. After a few small moments of nothing, Crayton got a little more concerned as he waited. Then he heard the classic line used to scare one another, and since Crayton hadn't foreseen this, he jumped forward, but spun on his right paw once he landed. This made him stopped and had let his eyes see what pokemon had decided to scare them.
Beat lifted up his wing in front of his face momentarily to block the rock thrown at him as it bounced off of his wing harmlessly. Lifting his head as if to seem somewhat superior to the other two, Beat finally spoke, grinning somewhat. " Hah! You should have seen the look on your faces! Didn't think that would actually work... " Well, prank well pulled. But he really did not want to get on anyone's bad side here. Beat really did not want any more pains in the neck. " Anyways, sorry for spooking 'ya. It just gets really dull around here sometimes. 'Name's Beat." The Noivern remained in a tall stance, but he was ready to take off if anyone tried to attack him. Some of the wild Pokemon around here had picked fights with the dragon Pokemon before. And they now better know better than to face him again.
Gyasi took a deep breath. The whole getting lost for half a day had him on edge, but as an explorer, he’d come across plenty of unfriendly pokemon. To say he was wary of strange pokemon jumping out at him was an understatement. He'd adopted an "attack now, ask questions later" policy due to more than one bad experience.
"Give us a warning next time you decide to just drop in." He gasped.
Beat, as he called himself, was a little hard for Gyasi to place. Reading and learning about pokemon was kinda his thing, so he knew more species than most, Crayton’s, for instance, was easy, but Beat’s was escaping him. He wracked his brain. Beat was a noibat- no, a noivern. This was his first time seeing one outside a picture.
“Gyasi.” He said, given a moment to recover.
His train of thought had him thinking of his real love of research - legends. Most of what pokemon knew on the subject was written down. What wasn’t was deep in caves or other places yet to be explored, or left only in their original locations, thus if he wanted to continue to learn, he had to travel. He didn’t haunt the forest as much as he did other places, but he’d heard there were some things that might be of interest to him.
Specifically, he’d heard of a big mossy stone, deep in the forest, that was said to give off an odd feeling. Perhaps it was time for a new goal.
Venturing deep into the forest could be dangerous alone. With a party of three it’d be a sinch.
“I don’t know about you two, but I’d like to make something of my day. I’ve heard there’s a strange stone deeper in the forest. Either of you want to come?” He asked.
There was no pleasure in this fowl trick, but of course, Crayton was trying to be passive. The mightyena always hated loud noises, even though the noise wasn't very loud, it made him jump. However, Crayton soothed and stood tall once more, looking at the noivern who stated his name as Beat. "I am Crayton," he said, stating his name for the second time. He didn't want to make enemies, but he had a feeling that Beat would be someone to possible deal with.
Then adventure was mentioned, and Crayton felt a smile form on his face. "That would be marvelous," Crayton stated. He loved adventure and perhaps he would find some neat items on the way. That is what excited the merchant the most was the new things to sell, and perhaps some allies.
Beat's ears perked up at the idea of going out on an quick adventure or something like that. He was still relatively tired, but going out and about for awhile couldn't hurt. When Crayton, as the Mightyena called himself, agreed to go, Beat felt rather pressured to go as well. " Well, can't hurt to do so. I'll tag along too. " Well, Beat knew most of this forest well from the skies. He was not much of a walker, since flying was a lot faster and more efficient. All of the trees made it hard to see the ground sometimes, so Beat had never seen any strange rocks around. Yet. " Anyways, we doing this from the ground or the skies? " Beat fanned his wings a few times before folding them in again, now awaiting a response from the two.
